4 Reasons Why Civil Engineering Is Trending
September 20, 2022College graduates who majored in engineering are the least likely to regret their field of study, according to Federal Reserve data that was shared by the Washington Post last week. With the number of science and engineering degrees almost doubling in the course of 18 years, that level of satisfaction says something.
Many of those graduates go on to be civil engineers. Here are just a few reasons why that’s a wise choice:
1. Civil engineers get paid well.
The average wage for a civil engineer in the U.S. is more than $100,000 per year – almost twice that of the national average wage. Though it varies by state, the estimated starting salary for civil engineers in the U.S. can range from $65,000 – $79,000. In Rapid City specifically, civil engineering makes the top 25 list for highest paying professions.
2. Civil engineers will always be needed.
Based on Bureau of Labor Statistics data, there will be demand for 24,200 new civil engineers annually for the next decade. That’s a 7% rate of growth from 2021 to 2031. Even in less ideal economic times, civil engineers can fare well. Some experts even put the vocation in the “recession-proof” category.
3. Civil engineering impacts everything.
Did you drive on a road today? Take a shower? Or sleep under a roof last night? You can thank an engineer. As the American Society of Civil Engineers puts it, “Civil engineers design, build, and maintain the foundation for our modern society – our buildings, roads and bridges, drinking water and energy systems, sea ports and airports, and the infrastructure for a cleaner environment, to name just a few.” Few professions offer the opportunity to tangibly make the world a better place in the way that engineering does.
4. Civil engineers are in good company.
From the professional who dreamed up the Eiffel Tower and the Prussian immigrant who designed the Brooklyn Bridge to these Dream Design professionals, civil engineers are in good company.
Speaking of good company, KTM Design Solutions are hiring engineers. Interested applicants can reach out by emailing engineers@ktmdsi.com or calling 605-791-5866.
